Also known as American Cocker Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel has a sturdy, compact body and a silky, flat or wavy coat which make it one of the most popular dogs in USA. It is one of the Spaniel type breeds, similar to the English Cocker Spaniel, and was originally bred as a gun dog for hunting small game, especially birds. The word cocker is commonly held to stem from their use to hunt woodcock in England. The first Cocker Spaniel registered in the United States AKC was “Captain” in 1878. Not until 1946, English Cocker Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel were recognized by the American Kennel Club as separate breeds.

Cocker Spaniel is a dog capable of considerable speed, combined with great endurance. Its head is chiseled with an abrupt stop. The muzzle is wide, deep and broad with a square jaw. The upper lip hangs down, covering the lower jaw completely. The teeth are strong and should meet in a scissors bite. The nose is always black on black dogs, but may be brown on other dogs. The eyes are round, set on so they look straightforward. The eye rims are slightly oval. The body is compact, with a short back. The topline should slope gently downwards from front to back. The front legs are straight, with good bone. He stands well up at the shoulder on straight forelegs with a topline sloping slightly toward strong, moderately bent, muscular quarters. Cocker Spaniels can be black, black with tan points, parti-colored or any solid color other than black.

Cocker Spaniel are intelligent, gentle dogs that thrive as part of a family. Cheerful, sweet, and sensitive, it is respectful of its master’s authority without much challenge. They are mostly easy to train and get along well with other animals. But they do not do well with rough or harsh training. Cockers are the smallest of the spaniels and the Sporting Group, but they are still an active Sporting breed that needs daily exercise. They understand their place is under humans, are good with children. Overall, it is an excellent bird and small-game hunter, great companion, good with children and all around friendly, lively dog.

According the report of AKC, Clumber Spaniel Dog was originated and developed in 18th-century France with ancestors such as the Basset Hound and early Alpine Spaniel. It is believed that this breed was brought to England by one of the dukes of Noailles in 1760s. The name is took from Clumber Park and that the Duke of Newcastle’s gamekeeper, William Mansell, is credited with its development and improvement. The breed was said to have arrived in Canada in 1848 and made its way into the United States where it was recognized by the AKC in 1883.

Appearing dignified and pensive, Clumber Spaniel has s heavy brow, deep chest, straight forelegs, powerful hindquarters, massive bone and good feet. It has a broad square head, wide across the top with a brownish or flesh colored nose. It has a deep stop and well developed lips. The muzzle is wide for good retrieving. The flews hang over the lower jaw. The eyes are dark amber and are slightly deep set, ears are large in the shape of vine leaves, hanging forward, and well covered with hair. The neck is thick, heavy, and feathered at the throat, and the tail is short-fringed. Dewclaw removal is optional. Carried level with the back, shoulders are robust and muscular. Limbs are short, straight and strong-boned. Its hair is thick, straight and silky in pure white with lemon or orange markings.

Although not as speedy as other sporting dogs, Clumber Spaniel will work all day, trotting along in his signature slow, rolling gait. It is a gentle, loyal and affectionate dog which responds best to positive training. He possesses an intrinsic desire to please. An intelligent and independent thinker, he displays determination and a strong sense of purpose while at work. A dog of dignity, the Clumber Spaniel may sometimes seem aloof with people unknown to him, but in time he will display his playful and loving nature. Clumbers are usually trustworthy with children of the family. Socialize them well the help them adjust to making friends with strangers. This breed is a gentle person’s dog; they do not take well to heavy-handed discipline. Puppies are especially curious and inventive.

Talking about Chinook dog, there is a name must mentioned that is Arthur Treadwell Walden of Wonalancet, New Hampshire. He was successed in breeding Chinook dog breeds in 1917. Chinook derived from a crossbreeding of husky stock from the Peary North Pole expedition with a large, tawny Mastiff-like male. Chinook was an outstanding lead dog, and was very popular in New Hampshire where he and his team accomplished many sledding feats. Walden is credited with bringing the sport of sled dog racing into the New Hampshire area and creating the New England Sled Dog Club in 1924, which is still operating today. The Chinook is a very rare breed. The Guinness Book of World Records listed the Chinook as the world’s rarest dog in 1966 when only 125 existed. The Chinook used to be an outstanding sled dog; but in the 1980s the breed was almost extinct, with only 12 breedable dogs left in the world. Their sled drive is greatly reduced. By 1981 only eleven breedable Chinooks survived. Breeders in Maine, Ohio and California divided the remaining stock and managed to save the type from extinction. The Chinook obtained registered status with the United Kennel Club in 1991; current numbers of registered animals are around 800.

What do Chinook look like? Chinook is balanced and muscular.Black markings on the inside corners of the eyes are preferred. Dark tawny to black markings on the ears and muzzle are preferred. Guard hairs on the tail may be black. No white markings are allowed. Buff markings on the cheeks, muzzle, throat, chest, breeches, toes and underside are acceptable.” The UKC standard faults any color other than tawny and disqualifies Albinism. Other proposed standards state that the medium-length double coat is “tawny” in color, with darker shadings on muzzle and ears; white dogs are not allowed, nor are other colors. Eyes are brown to amber in color. Ear carriage is variable, but dropped is preferred and the head more strongly rectangular than other sleddog breeds. The tail is a well-furred saber and not the usual brush or plume of Arctic breeds. They have a double coat of medium length hair. The undercoat is thick, soft, and downy in texture. The outer coat is coarse and the hair lies close to the body. Less dense coats are normal in very warm climates.

Chinook is famous for its calm and loyal. It is not aggressive with other dogs because it has been bred to work as part of a team. It will usually also do quite well with other family pets. This breed may occasionally be reserved around strangers, especially if it is in unfamiliar surroundings. The Chinook is especially good with children within the family and will even tolerate children from outside the family unit. It is important to treat this breed as part of the family – it will want to accompany you everywhere, and therefore, should not be an outside pet. The intelligent Chinook can be easily trained using positive reinforcement techniques, but it will not respond well to other, more negative, training tactics. A lot of space is not a requirement, but you do need to take them for daily walks where they are made to heel beside or behind you, never in front as the pack leader goes first.

Long long time ago, it was believed that Chinese Foo dog was the mascot and could bring good luck. In fact, Fu dogs were very popular among nobilty. These dogs originated from China and was bred originally for guarding Buddhist temples over 3,000 years ago. It’s origins can be dated back to Antiquity. It now has three sizes, however this page deals only with the large Chinese Foo Dog. The naming of this dog is highly significant to the Buddhist religion. The Chinese Foo resembles the looks of the lion which is a sacred animal to Buddhists. The Chinese word for Buddha is Fo, which led to the original name – the Dog of Fo. Dog Name Facts and Dog Names:The Chinese Foo is also known by the other names of the Sacred Dog of Sinkiang, the Chinese Choo Hunting Dog, the Chinese Temple Forest Dog, the Chinese Celestial Dog and the Chinese Dragon Dog. This dog is classified as one of the Working Dog Group which we go on to describe in detail in the section at the bottom of this page. The Chinese Foo is not currently Registered by the AKC and is therefore in the category of dogs we have termed termed Unrecognised & Rare Breeds.

Look at the picture of Chinese Food Dog, you will find why it is a symbol of energy and value. It is a massive breed with strong features. Its large and rounded head are its signature characteristic. The ears are short and set high on the head and rounded at the tip. The nose and the area surrounding are dark. The eyes are very small. Its double coat features a topcoat that is coarse and thick and an undercoat that is much softer and smoother. The coat naturally repels water. The tail is set high and curls over the side of the back. Its body is compact with muscular front and hind legs. The chest is broad and deep. There are three types of Chinese Foo Dogs in height: toy, miniature and standard. The three divisions of standard in weight are: small, medium, and large. The standard are over 15 inches, the miniature 10 – 15 inches, and the toy are less than 10 inches tall.

Chinese Foo Dogs are medium sized dogs, bulky and used for working. They are one of the spitz-type breeds, originally used to pull sleds, herd, and to guard. They are bold, energetic and make an excellent watch dog and guardian dog. They learn quickly, and are very intelligent. They tend to be good with children as well. The breed is full of energy and treats family members with affection. It was developed for hunting purposes and exhibits companion behavior. It responds well to training and is easily socialized. It is playful and does well with children. It is an even-tempered breed, but it will not back down when confronted. It is brave and will effectively guard its family property. Chinese Foo Dogs were often kept to guard palaces, sacred places and homes. They were popular in China for a time, and are thought to possibly be the link between the Chinese wolf and the Chow Chow. Hardy, alert and a courageous, the Chinese Foo Dog is excellent for a family needing a loving, working companion.

If you are interested in hairless dog breeds, I recommend Chinese Crested to you, which come in two varieties: the Hairless and the Powderpuff. It was originated in Africa where they were called “African Hairless Terriers.” The ancient Aztecs kept them as bedwarmers, and believe it or not, did eat them. The Chinese trading ships stopped along Africa on their routes, and it was there that they picked up these dogs because they were excellent ratters for aboard their ships. They renamed the dogs “Chinese Crested” and the name stuck. The stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee, used to breed Chinese Crested. This unusual breed was first exhibited in the West in 1885, but the first American breed club was not established until 1979. Full AKC recognition was granted in 1991. The similar Mexican Hairless was formerly recognized by the AKC, but is no longer recognized. The Chinese Crested Dog has been gaining popularity as a cheerful companion dog in both the United Stated and England.

One is hairless except for its feet, head and tail, and called, not surprisingly, the Hairless; the other is called the Powder Puff. It has a coat of long soft hair. Both come in numerous colors, either solid, mixed or spotted all over. It has a broad skull and a long muzzle. Eyes are dark, and ears are erect. The difference between a very hairy Hairless and a Powderpuff is that the Hairless has a single coat, often with hairless parts on the body, while the Powderpuff has a thick double coat. The skin of the Hairless comes in a variety of colors, ranging from a pale flesh to black. Hairless Cresteds often lack a full set of premolar teeth, but this is not considered a faul.

If you want to adopt a Chinese Crested, before you make a decision please read below: they are sweet, lively, playful and cuddly. They are exceptionally loving. Affectionate with children. Children should be taught not to be rough with this breed as it is friendly, but it does not have the protective hair that other breeds have and can get injured easily. They are an entertaining companion. Intelligent and very alert. Puppies should be well-socialized and exposed to loud noises when young to avoid potential timidity. If its owners do not baby them, these dogs can grow up to be a very well-adjusted dog. They have an ability to perform tricks and are generally good with other pets. They are not barkers. Chinese Crested Dogs like to climb and dig holes. They tend to become very attached to their owners. These dogs enjoy constant companionship, and need constant human leadership. Cresteds shed little to no hair and are on AKC’s list of breeds recommended for those with allergies. They are also alert and playful companions and do well in families with gentle children.

Historically used by area market hunters to retrieve waterfowl, Chesapeake Bay Retriever is primarily a family pet and hunting companion. It also know as Chessy Dog and Chessie. It is said that this breed was from two Newfoundland dogs – the male “Sailor” and female “Canton” – who were rescued from a foundering ship in Maryland in 1807. First used for hunting in the Chesapeake Bay, they proved to be excellent. Careful breeding over the years has created an outstanding retriever with incredible enthusiasm and endurance. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has been known to retrieve 200 ducks in a single day in frigid waters. This lively, enthusiastic hunter will come out of a river or marsh with only a few drops of water remaining on its coat, and these are quickly eliminated with a shake.

In body, the Chesapeake is a strong, well-balanced, powerfully built animal of moderate size and medium length in body and leg, deep and wide in chest. The head is round and broad with a medium stop and muzzle. The lips are thin. The small ears hang down and the eyes are yellowish colored. The tail is 12-15 inches (30-37 cm.) long. The forelegs should be straight with good bone. The coat of the cheasapeake is waterproof and feels slightly oily, which is often associated with a slight musky odor. Three basic colors are generally seen in the breed: brown, which includes all shades from a light to a deep dark brown; sedge, which varies from a reddish yellow through a bright red to chestnut shades; and deadgrass in all its shades, varying from a faded tan to a dull straw color.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever does well in obedience and tracking as well as in retrieving, hunting tests and field trials. It shows a bright and happy disposition with an intelligent expression. Courage, willingness to work, alertness, nose, intelligence, love of water, general quality. They also make a fine family companion. They are affectionate and good with children. The Chesapeake can be fairly dominant and will become willful and may developed dominance problems if it senses the owners are passive, meek or timid. Be sure to properly train and socialized them. Take your puppy out with you as much as possible and introduce it to other dogs so that it has a chance to feel relaxed with them. The Chesapeake is different than other retrievers in that they need a more dominant owner. Without the proper leadership they can become territorial, aggressive, willful, reserved with strangers and may be combative with other dogs. These are strong dogs that require firm training and good management.

In dogs’ world, they live 5-6 years on the average. But there is a reported saying that Chart Polski hunting dog live the longest that tend to live to 10-12 years old.In the 12th century, it was a popular sport among the Poland nobles hunting with sighthounds and falcons. Chart Polski, also known as Polish Greyhound, is a Polish sighthound breed but not a direct relative of the Greyhound dog. The Polish Kennel Club has confirmed the breed in 1981. Eight years later, in June 1989, it was recognized by the F.C.I.

With a typical, long, powerful but very noble head, Chart Polski has a short, smooth fur that comes in many colors. They have a longer brush on the tail and have culottes at the rear of the thighs. The average Polish Greyhound weighs about 65-95 pounds, and ranges from 27-32 inches tall. The Chart Polski has a smooth double coat, regardless of season, which is harsh to the touch while offering excellent insulation. This Regal canine, is not actually a Greyhound, rather a different breed on it’s own. While it may seem similar in looks, the Chart Polski standard deems that this dog is much stronger, and less slight, or thin. This is a persistent hunter, with a long muscular neck, unlike the greyhound, and the head is carried high. Large almond eyes are set in a slant, and the points of the hip bones are WIDE apart. The hind legs move closer together when the dog is moving at a short trot: this is called “lacing”. This beautiful regal, royal breed, should be recognized for it’s own attributes, and not confused with a greyhound subspecies.

Chart Polski can be dog aggressive, due to their being bred to hunt wolves and can be very territorial. They have a strong pack instinct and will not always accept new dogs into their home. It is a good-tempered dog — very loyal, devoted, and demonstrative to its family. It should be noted that the breed is also quite protective of its family and territory, and is often suspicious of strangers. This breed requires proper early socialization, firm and fair human leadership, and must never be treated harshly. Like many other sighthounds, the Chart is very intelligent, creative, and can be stubborn. They are obedient and easy to train, although they can be stubborn and willfull. This is not the best breed for the novice dog owner. They need early socialization and firm, fair guidance from their owners.

Do you know what the most popular dog breed is in Russian? The answer is Central Asian Ovtcharka with a 4000 years history, which also named Central Asian Shepherd Dog. It is likely originated in a geographical area between the Ural, Caspian Sea, Asia Minor, and the Northwest border of China. They are found in the areas of Russia, Iran and Afghanistan to Siberia. Six more countries that share this area are- Kazakstan, Kirghizastan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Russia. This independent and aloof breed has protected nomadic herdsmen and their flocks for centuries. Similar dogs may have accompanied the Mongols when they invaded eastern and central Europe, and were probably the source of Europe’s herd-protecting sheepdogs. This breed is seldom seen outside the Central Asian Republic; in Russia it is in decline, losing favor to the larger Caucasian Sheepdog. The CAS is beginning to be bred in the USA.

Central Asian Ovtcharka is as long as tall at the withers, or slightly longer than tall. Head is very solid, without pronounced stop or sculls. Neck is low set, short, dewlap. Body is fairly broad, proportionate, muscles are rather flat. Ribcage appears very long, because of developed false ribs. The skin on the face is thick and may form wrinkles. The thighs are powerful. The back is strong, and moderately long. Straight legs, heavy boning, moderate yet defined angulation. Leg bones must be in proportion, and shall never give impression that any bone is short. The dense coat comes in two varieties, long and short. The coat comes in a wide variety of colors.

Central Asian Ovtcharka is a protective and dominant dog that also known for being calm and serene and having a very fearless and courageous personality. It is very aggressive with other dogs and should always be kept on a leash or lead when out of a fenced yard. Since they are so dominant and dog-aggressive it is important to start socialize training as early as possible so that they can feel as comfortable with stranger animals. Within the home, however, they get along very well with other animals whether they are dogs or cats.Because of their protective nature they are highly wary of any stranger. When it comes to children this breed of dog extends its protective personality to them and it is important to make sure that any strangers are carefully supervised around this dog. Children that are strangers to the Central Asian Ovtcharka should not be left alone with this dog. Carefully socialization as puppies can help minimize this issue with the breed. With the protective nature Central Asian Ovtcharka makes a good dog with children. They are not overly playful after then get out of their puppy stage, but they are good companion dogs for families.

If you like toy dogs, you must have heard about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It is also named Blenheim Spaniel or Ruby Spaniel, which is descended from the King Charles Spaniel and other small Toy Spaniels. Its breeders were trying to reproduce a toy dog similar to those seen in portraits from the time of England’s Charles II, who was said to dote on these small dogs. In the 1920′s the American, Roswell Eldridge, offered prize money during a Cruft’s Dog Show in London, to any person exhibiting King Charles Spaniels with long noses. He was looking for dogs similar to those appearing in Van Dyck’s paintings of King Charles II and his spaniels. By the 1940′s these dogs were classified as a separate breed and were given the prefix Cavalier, to differentiate them from their forebears. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was shown in the Toy Group of the AKC beginning in 1996.

Different from most other spaniels, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a full-length tail, well-feathered with long hair, which is usually not docked, which is typically carried aloft when walking. The tail is sometimes docked to no less then three times its length. It has a conical muzzle and a flat skull. It has a shallow stop, with well developed nose and wide nostrils. The ears are long with abundant feathering. It has a silky coat, sometimes with a slight waviness that comes in ruby, black and tan, tri-color and blenheim.

Playful, extremely patient and eager to please, all these make Cavalier a toy dog kept in house. They are intelligent enough to understand what you want and therefore are usually easy to train and respond well to gentle obedience training. They are said to be naturally well behaved and get along well with other dogs and non-canine pets. Cavalier’s love people, enjoy companionship, and need rules to follow and limits to what they are allowed to do. Cavaliers will adapt quickly to almost any environment, family, and location. They are great with people of all ages, from children to seniors, making them a very versatile dog.In addition to being the dog’s leader, socialize well to avoid them being reserved with strangers. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a pleasant companion dog. It has a noteworthy sense of smell and vision and can be used in short hunts in open country. They do well in competitive obedience.
