Introduction of Chesapeake Bay Retriever Dog Breeds

Historically used by area market hunters to retrieve waterfowl, Chesapeake Bay Retriever is primarily a family pet and hunting companion. It also know as Chessy Dog and Chessie. It is said that this breed was from two Newfoundland dogs – the male “Sailor” and female “Canton” – who were rescued from a foundering ship in Maryland in 1807. First used for hunting in the Chesapeake Bay, they proved to be excellent. Careful breeding over the years has created an outstanding retriever with incredible enthusiasm and endurance. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has been known to retrieve 200 ducks in a single day in frigid waters. This lively, enthusiastic hunter will come out of a river or marsh with only a few drops of water remaining on its coat, and these are quickly eliminated with a shake.

In body, the Chesapeake is a strong, well-balanced, powerfully built animal of moderate size and medium length in body and leg, deep and wide in chest. The head is round and broad with a medium stop and muzzle. The lips are thin. The small ears hang down and the eyes are yellowish colored. The tail is 12-15 inches (30-37 cm.) long. The forelegs should be straight with good bone. The coat of the cheasapeake is waterproof and feels slightly oily, which is often associated with a slight musky odor. Three basic colors are generally seen in the breed: brown, which includes all shades from a light to a deep dark brown; sedge, which varies from a reddish yellow through a bright red to chestnut shades; and deadgrass in all its shades, varying from a faded tan to a dull straw color.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever does well in obedience and tracking as well as in retrieving, hunting tests and field trials. It shows a bright and happy disposition with an intelligent expression. Courage, willingness to work, alertness, nose, intelligence, love of water, general quality. They also make a fine family companion. They are affectionate and good with children. The Chesapeake can be fairly dominant and will become willful and may developed dominance problems if it senses the owners are passive, meek or timid. Be sure to properly train and socialized them. Take your puppy out with you as much as possible and introduce it to other dogs so that it has a chance to feel relaxed with them. The Chesapeake is different than other retrievers in that they need a more dominant owner. Without the proper leadership they can become territorial, aggressive, willful, reserved with strangers and may be combative with other dogs. These are strong dogs that require firm training and good management.
