Introduction of Canadian Eskimo Dog Breeds

Have you ever seen the film “Eight Below”? I fall in loved with Canadian Eskimo Dog after that. It is one of the five indigenous dogs that Canada is proud to call their own. They were an adherent, important and vital part assisting in everyday survival of the Inuit and their families. The dogs provided the means of travel by sled, assisted in hunting and served as protectors 2000 years ago. Their estimated time of arrival is approximately 1100-1200 AD. The Canadian Eskimo Dog was first bred by the Thule people, while research has shown that it is related to the Greenland dog, with very little significant genetic differences. It is sometimes considered the same breed by authorities, although the Greenland dog can be criticized for lacking any proper breeding program, questioning its validity as a pure breed.Explorers noted that the dogs were capable of tracking a seal hole from a great distance, and were occasionally used to hunt polar bears. In 1959 the AKC dropped the breed from its registry because of extremely low numbers.

The majestic and powerful physique of Canadian Eskimo Dogs is built for hard work, not speed. It has a powerful physique with a thick neck, broad chest and strong, thickly muscled legs. The feet are densely furred and the thick double coat is completely weather proof. The colors and color combinations often range through white, grey, brown, sable, black/white, red/buff, red/white and colored patches on the head with a white body. Any dog color is acceptable and random coloring is desirable. With a zest for life and a gentle disposition, Canadian Eskimo Dogs make wonderful companions for the active or outdoors minded, and hard working sled dogs for the serious musher – or the recreational team.

Canadian Eskimo Dog is loyal, tough, brave, intelligent, and alert. It is affectionate and gentle, and develops a deep bond with its owner and is intensely loyal. When used as sled dogs, they were often required to forage and hunt for their own food. Easy to train, and once commands have been mastered, he never forgets them. His memory is phenomenal. To hear the wolfish singing of an Eskimo Dog is to be irresistibly drawn to him for life. Consequently, many Canadian Eskimo Dogs have stronger prey drive than some other breeds. Owing to their original environment, they take pure delight in cold weather, often preferring to sleep outside in cold climates. Like most spitz breeds they can be very vocal.
