It is said that no other purebred northern breed dog can compete with the Alaskan Husky in racing speed. The Alaskan Husky is basically a mixed-breed dog, in which northern or husky-type ancestry, such as the Siberian Husky or the traditional Alaskan village dog, predominates.

The history of the Alaskan Husky Dog really began with the Gold Rushes of the late nineteenth century; sled and draft dogs used by miners of that era were typically heavy draft dogs with obvious Saint Bernard ancestry. The importation into Alaska of dogs from across the Bering Strait in Siberia in 1908 and subsequent years changed Alaskan sled dogs radically and permanently towards a smaller dog with lighter weight and much greater speed. With the increasing prevalence of motorized winter transport in the mid twentieth century, working sled dogs became less common in the northern villages. The Alaskan sled dog experienced a revival in the 1970s. George Attla, a Native Alaskan from the village of Huslia, was largely responsible for this. Many successful racing dogs today trace their lineage back to Attla dogs.

Alaskan Huskies are proficient sled dogs that are usually larger and leaner than Siberian Huskies. They have long, muscular legs and a substantial tuck-up. Their coats are short or medium in length, and they are usually not as dense as those of the northern purebreds. The color and markings on this breed’s coat will totally vary. The shorter coat length is governed by the need for effective heat dissipation while racing.

Predominately bred for work, Alaskan Huskies are intelligent, trainable, and have an independent streak. Gentle and playful, this cheerful dog is very fond of his or her family. A puppy at heart, they are clever, sociable and loving, easy-going and docile. Though they do generally have a lot of energy, especially as puppies. Good with children and friendly with strangers, they are not watchdogs, for they bark little and love everyone. They are willful and stubborn, but also very gentle and kind. They have a cheerful disposition, and they make very loving pets. They are especially good with children and social with strangers. They are laid-back, clever, and docile. Sometimes prone to getting bored or lonely, an Alaskan Husky needs plenty of companionship and a patient trainer. Alaskan Huskies generally make excellent companions, as long as an owner is understanding and dedicated of the breed.
